I have very bad eczema. I'm a nurse and constantly washing my hands. This is great for my dry hands, how ever i did not try it on my face. This soap may have been my answer. this may work as quick and equal as hydro-cortisone. Just after washing use a cream like dream cream.

im glad they added it into my package, ill probably be buying more. i have very oily skin and it helped a great deal. i wish it didn't smell so awful, and maybe if it came in a jar, the soap is a little hard to handle

So, this is the first product to disappoint me. :( So sad! I got this because I have HORRENDOUS combo skin -- dry, flakey, peely and oily as hell all at the same time. Oh, and acne too... because I didn't have enough skin issues! I bought Coalface since so many people swear by it -- I've used Dark Angels before with great results, but it's too abrasive for daily use. Coalface has a similar composition and scent, which isn't too bad at all (beats Herbalism). Yes, it's messy because of the charcoal in it but I think it's a small price to pay if the product works well, and I usually use it in the shower anyway. For one, make sure you keep this DRY because it will melt! This wrecked havoc on my face: it was drier and oilier than ever after using it. :( Talk about disappointing! No soap should ever leave that "squeaky clean" feeling after, because that means it is drying the hell out of your skin. Coalface not only left my skin TOO clean, but it somehow worsened my acne and dryness. I noticed an increase in oiliness in less than a week. Oh, well.

I've always had very nice skin; a few black heads on my nose, a monthly zit that disappeared completely within a few days, a little sensitive and dry, but overall very nice and even. However, I recently moved house, and I don't know if this has anything to do with it or what, but my face broke out like mad. I've never had acne that I couldn't vanquish with a few applications of spot treatment but this was crazy. I had bumps and GIANT black heads all over my forehead and around my mouth/cheek area. Nothing I did worked and I tried everything I could think of, acne washes didn't work because even though my skin had some intense problem areas the rest of it was still sensitive so I'd get flakey where I wasn't breaking out, my zits laughed in the face of spot treatments ranging from clean and clear to dermologica, toners and refining masks did nothing. I switched over to the Angels on Bare Skin wash from Lush and after a week or so of using it all of my skin around the break outs was beautiful but I still had these giant mutant black heads. I decided to try and use the Coal Face bar as a sort of spot treatment, so at night when I use the heavier moisturizer I wash my face all over with Cetaphil for sensitive skin and then only wash the trouble areas with the coal face cleanser and the difference in my skin is phenomenal. My girlfriend says it's like my blackheads are being erased. I've only been using it for about a week so we'll have to see if any problems occur due to it's use but so far it's done more for my skin than an arsenal of acne treatments combined.

I was skeptical about using a black soap, but after just one use I was in love. I used coalface all summer and it's been fabulous.

I like to rub it in my hands first and then was my face because it can be a little abrasive to rub directly on your face.

This is an awesome product for men because it makes shaving your face a lot easier after using it. It has a really nice neutral scent as well.

It can dry out your skin a little so I moisturize as soon as I get out of the shower to keep from drying out.

It makes my skin look tight, fresh, clean and smooth. The reason I bought this product was because the store assistant washed just one of my hands and held them up to each other and the one she washed literally looked ten years younger. This product is just fantastic, especially for people with oily skin.

I didn't intend to buy this product when I went to my Local Lush the other night. I went there to try out the Dark Angels Cleanser because my cousin really liked the results from it and I was looking for something scrubby. I tried it and wasn't crazy about it... plus they only had it in containers for $15. The girl that helped me then showed me Coal Face. The texture was silky and glided over my skin smoothly. There were also little exfoliating bits in it which made me happy because that was the whole point of getting a new cleanser. I ended up buying it and later that night when I used it on my face it was gentle and smoothed out my skin. I am really happy with the results it gave (along with a few other products I combined with it). I have sensitive, acne-prone skin and this soap didn't irritate my face at all.. I highly recommend it!

I love, Love, LOVE Coalface! I watched the review here online then went into my local LUSH store to get my own. I was skeptical at first since my skin is so difficult to work with, exceedingly oily T zone and dry everywhere else the the point of being itchy with some cleansers. I have always had to be really selective with my facial cleansing products and how I balance their use. BUT NOT WITH THIS AND NEVER AGAIN!
This exfoliates and cleanses deeply to remove dirt, oil, and other baddies from my face, leaving it soft, smooth, and clean for the day. It's not harsh either so washing and laying on a thin moisturizer is all I need. Most of my once daily cleansing and make up routine is all but eliminated thanks to this little slice of heaven.
The best part is that a little goes a long long way. I've had a whole slice for a month now and my boyfriend and I share it. We cut small pieces off to use and so far I'm still on my first smaller than palm size slice (3 weeks later!). I expect that this one big slice can last us about 4-6 months with daily use!
For all you combo, oily, problematic skin type girls who want something that works great and basically pays for itself over time, here you go. Thanks LUSH!

I was really excited to try this, as I have combination skin and have been reading on here how great it is for people with my same skin type. I experience habitual (but mild) breakouts in my t-zone area and have been perpetually searching for that product/product combination that will clear it up once and for all. Coalface, however, made me breakout more than I've ever seen. I kept trying it for several days in case something else was causing the breakout, but each day I washed with Coalface, it seemed I worsened my skin situation. No product has ever ignited this same kind of reaction from my skin. I had to spend a week healing my skin back to normalcy... obviously I'll take my mild, perpetual breakouts over what this did to my skin any day. I'm glad that it worked for other people, but since it's not across-the-board magic for those with combination skin, it leads me to believe that you pretty much have to try this product to see if it works for you or not.

This cleanser clears out pores and leaves skin squeaky clean! I have occasionally sensitive skin skin, but at the same time it's oily/combination, and when my skin is super oily, this cleanser gently gets rid of the grease and deep cleans with it's micro-exfoliation properties; after I dry, my face is a bit red, but that goes away in minutes, and my skin looks brighter! The cleanser doesn't lather into bubbles, but rather it's a smooth, almost pudding-like lather. Indescribable, this is a one of a kind cleanser!

I love this stuff. Have now been using about 2 years and will never go back to "commercial" acne products. I use in conjunction with Greased Lightning and a non-Lush moisturizer, and am grateful for its effectiveness.

Don't be scared by the smell of this product, it is wonderful. It makes my oily skin feel smooth and soft and doesn't leave any filmy residue. My skin also is much clearer since I have been using this.

I was convinced to try this soap despite its smell. I happen to absolutely loathe licorice. While you use the soap the smell is strong, however, it does NOT linger on your skin especially when paired with a Lush moisturizer. Someone else said to try just using your hands. I also recommend this because you can easily scratch your face using the soap directly on it. My skin feels amazing for the first time in years. I've desperately been trying to find a balance between breaking out like mad and drying my face out to the point of being painful. The smell is definitely worth the results. I love this product and it's forever going on my must have list. My skin is smooth and the improvements just keep coming. Definitely give this soap a shot!

i buy it in small chunks at the store.
a little goes a long way
do not rub bar on your face!
it will scratch your skin
wet face, make lather in hands and then apply to skin
i have super oily skin and it will break out in whiteheads if i do not keep on it
this does dry me out a little which is what i need
if you are super dry you may not want to try this
but i LOVE this soap!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE

I've never enjoyed the daily skincare routine before I found Coalface. Now it's a treat to wash my face twice a day! I keep a bar in my shower and a bar on my sink. I didn't like the scent the first time I used it, but I quickly fell in love with the delicious licorice smell! Coalface is perfect for combo skin, but make sure you follow up with a good moisturizer... I'm partial to Imperialis.

I recieved a sample of this, and now I just have to buy it! I have oily skin and this was really great. The only thing I didn't care for was the black licorice smell. One of my all time hated smells. Icky but the cleanser is worth it.

I've been using this for a while and it truly is such a great cleanser. I have very sensitive skin, so I used it once a day in the beginning and built up to twice a day. Bottom line: it cleans so well (even gets off my super-waterproof eyeliner and mascara), clears up any imperfections, and lasts a long time in a well-drained soap dish. When my bar's gone, I'll be coming back for more!

I was gettin ready to check out at Lush one day and I quickly grabbed one of these. I was hesitant about trying it, but I wanted a face wash that was environment and animal-friendly. I'm so glad I tried this. This is the best face wash I've ever used. I love this stuff... as does my husband. I don't have acne-prone skin but my face can get dry really easily and oily easy. This balances my skin and actually keeps my face CLEAN... I don't feel oily a few hours after I use it. My husband was breaking out on his back and face nd I noticed his face was a little oily, so I suggested he started using this and he LOVES it. It has cleared up his face completely and has started clearing up his back. The smell is interesting... it actually does smell a little like coal, but it has a clean addictive scent. I love it. I don't think I could live without this stuff. Last time we went to Lush my husband even made sure I bought some. He doesn't want to live without it either.

I've tried various facial products and think I finally found the right one, although the only thing that puts me off is the smell. It's a somewhat medicinal smell but I love the way it feels on my skin, I like the scrubbiness of the charcoal. I also like that it's a solid cleanser so I can cut off pieces (soft enough to cut with a plastic knife) and budget its use, plus put it in a tin or plastic case for travel.

I LOVE this soap!! i normally just run it under the water and scrub the bar all over my face and then rinse the bar off and place it back in it's dish. i then rub the soap thats on my face around with my hands to exfoliate more. i LOVEEE! the feel of the charcoal and this combined with plain which hazel as a toner makes my skin so soft and keeps it oil free!
