Henna is a natural dye derived from lawsonia inermis, a privet-type bush that grows abundantly throughout the Middle East that's been used since about 3400 BC. When used as a hair dye, henna imparts a vibrant red color that also coats hair to provide conditioning and abundant shine.

LUSH's Les Cacas are made with only the finest henna, which is grown in Iran. We offer four different shades derived by mixing henna with other natural ingredients such as chamomile, rhubarb, coffee and indigo. All are completely natural and safe for all hair and scalps and are especially recommended for those with allergies, sensitivities and women who are pregnant or nursing. As an added benefit, henna helps protect the hair from the damaging effects of UV rays.

Henna works by coating each individual hair like a varnish, making the hair cuticles lay flat. (Unlike synthetic dyes that open the cuticles and lodge the color particles into the cuticles themselves.) There is less worry about re-growth as henna fades gradually and there is no obvious root line.

It works best when you hair is clean and dry and it can be used safely on natural, color-treated or permed hair. Just be sure to do a strand test to help ensure you get the results you intended. Henna also has a stunning effect greying heads. The grey bits will sparkle bright red among the darker hairs. If you've over 40 percent grey, you can expect a very vibrant result. (To ensure you're prepared for the outcome, always do a strand test and be sure to include some grey hairs.)

Henna can diminish the effect of perming solution, so if you want permed and hennaed hair, get the perm first and apply the Caca a bit later.

If you don't like the color (because you didn't do a strand test like we told you!), don't try to bleach it or follow with synthetic dyes. These chemicals open the hair's cuticles thus shoving the henna deeper in and making it harder to remove. You can simply let it fade away with more frequent washing, or try layering it another henna shade to closer match your expectations.

Deeper colors can be built up by re-applications as often as you fancy. Using it for three days in a row gives you a deep, rich color and shine that lasts for weeks.

Gather up your supplies. You will need the following:

  • Rubber gloves

  • A clip (or three) to keep your hair out of the way during the application process

  • Plastic cling wrap

  • Dark-colored towels (at least two)

  • Heat-proof bowl in a saucepan or a double boiler (bain-marie)

  • Boiling water (ideally in a tea kettle)

  • Squeeze bottle or pastry cone (optional)

  • Newspapers to cover the floor. Important: If you spill any henna on uncovered surfaces clean it up right away.

Do a strand test.

Natural hennas produce variable results depending on your hair's color, condition, sun exposure, and previous chemical treatments (like highlights or perms).

Always do a strand test to ensure the henna you selected will create the desired results.

For a strand test, follow the instructions below and apply to just a small section of hair in a discrete location. Be sure to include any grey, color-treated or permed sections. Because henna continues to brighten your hair for a couple of hours after you've washed it out, give it a little extra time before making a final determination.

Prepare the henna for application.
CAUTION: Do not microwave!
  • Break the henna up into smaller pieces (some users even grate it)   and place into a heat-proof bowl.

  • How much you use is entirely dependent on the amount of hair to be treated and desired effects. We recommend at least 1/3 of a block to start for shoulder length hair and you can adjust from  there with future applications.

  • Add boiling water to cover. Allow the water to soak through. Stir gently. This mixture should have the consistency of yogurt. If it does not, then gradually add more boiling water.

  • Place the bowl into a saucepan with hot (but not boiling water) and heat the henna mixture until it is just bearable to the touch. The hotter the better for brighter color, but no need to make it scalding hot. If you have other things to do, you can let this mixture steep a while longer…

The application process.

  • Now comes the messy part. Be sure to put down newspaper on the floor to catch any drippings.

  • Create a barrier with face cream (or Ultra Bland) around your hair line and around your ears to help protect your skin from discoloration.

  • Separate your clean, dry hair into several sections using hair clips, we recommend at least three.

  • Wearing rubber gloves, apply henna to your hair in sections, working from back to front, covering the roots first and working out to the ends. (This is where you might want to fill a squeeze bottle or pastry cone with the henna to help control the application process.) Apply generously; ensuring each and every strand of hair is thickly coated.

  • When all sections are coated, give your hair and scalp an extra massage to further ensure all hairs are fully saturated -- roots to tips.

  • For a redder color, wrap your hair in cling wrap to keep the heat in. If you desire a more brownish, darker color, you can leave head unwrapped (just watch for drips). Clean up your hairline and ears with a damp cloth.

  • Leave on for at least two hours and for as much as six hours. Take some time for your self; watch a movie, read a good book; listen to your favorite CDs. Relax.

    Rinse it out.

  • Removing henna can be a time-consuming process, but you've already invested several hours, what's an extra 10 minutes or so?

  • If your hair is very long, you might want to give it a pre-soak by filling the tub, getting in and laying back to soak your entire head of hair underwater for about five to 10 minutes, loosening up the henna mask.

  • Then start up the shower as you would normally to wash hair. We recommend a liquid, clarifying shampoo like I Love Juicy or Rehab. It may take two to three shampooings to remove all the henna. This is normal, be patient. It will be worth it. Use your usual conditioner to help detangle.

  • Dry and style as normal. The color will continue to brighten for several hours even after the henna is shampooed out.

  • For even deeper color, reapply henna daily for three days. You will have long-lasting, rich color, amazing conditioning and fantastic shine.
